Creative Translation Days with Sophie Lau

Last year I took part in the Festival of World Literature, a brand new schools project launched by the Stephen Spender Trust and funded by John Lyon’s Charity. In 2021 I had trained with SST to design and deliver creative translation workshops for young people, and was subsequently invited to join the SST Associates community of practice. The Festival of World Literature was my second major SST project.

Together with a group of fellow SST Associates, I ran creative translation days in schools across North and West London. Based on books in Arabic, French, Polish and Spanish, these translation days provided a nurturing space for students to engage in cultural exchange and celebrate languages learnt at school, as well as heritage languages spoken by themselves and their peers.
